Infuriating Manga Villains

What anime or manga villain made you so mad that you forgot they weren't real? The first villain I distinctly remember angering me was Queen Nakia of Red River/Anatolia Story. I hated how she would always get away with her schemes despite seeming so obvious. She would literally use her fan to cover the mouth of a subordinate who is about to expose her, and no one questions that may be she's evil! Nah, it's totally normal to physically silence a witness.

Well the newest infuriating villain is Malty Melromarc (aka Mein) from The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari). She feigned kindness to the protagonist Naofumi, later claiming he raped her after stealing his equipment.

Whenever Naofumi seems to convince third parties of his innocence, she claims he's literally brainwashing them. As if the Shield Hero has that ability. Since she's also the princess, Naofumi can't fight back much. Malty is so horrible, her mother the Queen decided her younger sister was a better fit as heiress to the throne. Of course Malty wouldn't take that sitting down. She'd even try harming her sister, and guards allow it! Now I'm just waiting for her downfall, and it better be proportional to Naofumi's suffering.

It always seems to be royal women who are the most aggravating...

Car Accidents in Manga

Car accidents seem to be a manga go-to when it comes to how characters get injured. Similar to the way Korean dramas take care of villains by deciding they suddenly have some type of cancer.

How did a character who is reborn into another world die in the first place? Got hit by a car. How do you add drama to a romance story? Make a character lose their memory in a car accident. A character needs to meet a God or supernatural creatures so...have them save some child who runs into the street after a ball (Yu Yu Hakusho). Speaking of which, saving someone else from an incoming car is the go-to way to show the character is a saint!

This was really just a rant on a pattern we've seen in manga. Beware the white truck of death!

Isekai Manga

We are obsessed with 'isekai' manga! Literally meaning 'different world', seeing someone pulled from what is typically our world and brought to a world or magic or monsters has an odd appeal. Most of the time, they are endowed with skills or knowledge that make them overpowered in their new setting, such as God-like magic potential or technological knowledge.

Recommendations? Here's a few along with short descriptions just to get you interested:

Takarakuji de 40-oku Atattandakedo Isekai ni Ijuu Suru, about a man who wins the lottery and stumbles upon a room leading to another world which is technologically underdeveloped.

Isekai de "Kuro no Iyashi Te" tte Yobarete Imadu, about a girl who is transported to an RPG-like world, complete with pop-up screens and magic.

Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi, about a man who has exceptional cooking skills and the ability to summon cooking items and ingredients.

Isekai Yakkyoku, about a reincarnated pharmacologist who is granted the ability to see disease and ill statuses, making him a Medicine God.

There are plenty more (included those pictured above but not mentioned). Some still need English translations, but maybe if we express how obsessed we are with the genre, these manga will be picked up like hotcakes.

Black Clover

We thought we'd talk about Black Clover since the anime adaptation is coming this October. It's a good underdog story that should appeal to many manga readers. Still ongoing with more than 100 chapters, we won't spoil anything beyond the first few chapters.

The story follows Asta (some people refer to him as Aster). He's physically strong, but in a world of magic and grimoires, he's looked down upon since he can't use magic. His close friend and rival Yuno is the opposite, regarded as a talented magician. Both aim to become the Wizard King/Magic Emperor (waiting to see what the anime calls it).

When the time comes to receive their own grimoires (most people receive three-leaf clover grimoires which allow them to cast spells), Yuno receives a legendary four-leaf clover grimoire known to belong to the first Wizard King, while Asta initially receives nothing. He of course gets depressed and angry about being laughed at and told to try again next year. After a violent encounter, he eventually receives his very own grimoire. It is dirty and tattered, but it's actually a five-leaf clover grimoire that gives him a large sword that complements his physical abilities. The sword can repel and nullify magic, making his skills quite unique. You then follow him as he improves his skills, makes new friends, and experiences many new things (no spoilers).

Interested yet? We recommend giving Black Clover a try if you were on the fence about it. It's available on Amazon here.
